Solar Outpacing All Other Electricity Sources

In 2023, solar power emerged as the frontrunner in the race for sustainable energy transition, surpassing all other sources of electricity generation within the United States. The latest reports from federal government sources show a remarkable transformation in the nation’s energy mix, with solar power leading the charge towards a greener future.

The SUN DAY Campaign’s analysis of federal reports released in December reveals a significant milestone for solar energy. According to FERC’s “Energy Infrastructure Update,” solar contributed 10,937 MW of new domestic generating capacity in 2023, accounting for 42.1% of the country’s total. This surge in solar installations surpassed other major sources, including natural gas, wind, and hydropower.

Solar’s ascendancy is further accented by its growing share of total generating capacity, reaching 7.3% according to FERC. While it still trails behind wind energy, solar is rapidly closing the gap, demonstrating its potential to reshape the nation’s energy dependence.

Renewable Revolution in Electrical Generation

The EIA’s “Electric Power Monthly” corroborates the momentum behind solar power, revealing that electrical generation from all renewables accounted for 22.8% of U.S. electrical generation in 2023. Solar, including residential rooftop installations, experienced the most significant growth among all energy sources, expanding by 14.7% compared to the previous year.

Solar-Wind Synergy

The synergy between solar and wind power is a key driver of renewable energy growth, with both sources accounting for 15.6% of the nation’s electrical generation from January to October 2023. This substantial contribution nearly rivaled that of coal, signaling a shift.

Despite the remarkable progress in solar energy deployment, challenges persist. The continued reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation, as highlighted by the EIA’s “Monthly Energy Review,” shows just how far we still need to go to limit carbon output.

As solar emerges as the fastest-growing source of electricity, there is a pressing need for concerted efforts to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and nuclear power. The SUN DAY Campaign’s executive director, Ken Bossong, emphasizes the importance of scaling up renewable energy deployment to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
